Restrictions of Routine, is the work created in conjunction with my MFA Thesis. The painting are in response to my observations of intersections and construction sites as I ran along the urban peripheries of the City of Waterloo. The dominant theme tying these paintings together is a struggle between internal and external obstacles, obstructions such as traffic cones or construction fencing that routinely force us to readjust our routine path. The convenience of a once familiar route is taken for granted, yet when disrupted we must adapt to often confused visual markers, whether by taking an alternate route or slowing down and moving through the disruption. As a series of interconnected works, the paintings at once map my observations of the urban environment and evoke my movements through these often contested spaces.
